Spinal Decompression Explained

Spinal Decompression Graphic

If you're struggling with chronic back or neck pain, spinal decompression therapy may offer the relief you've been searching for—without surgery or heavy medication. This non-invasive treatment is designed to gently stretch the spine, creating space between the vertebrae and allowing herniated or bulging discs to retract. But how exactly does it work—and is it right for you?

What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal decompression is a type of motorized traction that aims to relieve pressure on the spinal discs—the cushions between your vertebrae. By gently pulling the spine, the therapy reduces compression on nerves, improves blood flow, and promotes the movement of water, oxygen, and nutrients into the discs for healing.

Benefits of Spinal Decompression

  • Pain Relief: Reduces pressure on nerves and discs, easing chronic back and neck pain.

  • Non-Surgical: A safe, conservative alternative to spine surgery.

  • Improved Mobility: Helps restore range of motion and flexibility.

  • Disc Healing: Supports the rehydration and repair of damaged discs.

What to expect

Each session typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes. You’ll lie comfortably on a special table while a harness is gently applied around your torso. The machine then applies controlled traction to your spine. Most people describe the experience as relaxing while feeling a light stretch.

A full treatment plan may include multiple sessions over several weeks, depending on your specific condition and goals.

Conditions Commonly Treated with Spinal Decompression

Cervical Spine

  • Cervical disc herniation

  • Cervical radiculopathy (nerve pain radiating into the arms)

  • Cervical degenerative disc disease

  • Neck tension and restricted range of motion

  • Cervical facet dysfunction

Lumbar Spine

  • Lumbar disc herniation or bulging

  • Sciatica (radiating leg pain due to nerve compression)

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Lumbar spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)

  • Facet joint syndrome
